SPORT Makos man makes his mark on pitch It was really good to see our local lad Vernon Fredericks have a big game for the Makos on Sunday against Otago. Vernon is a top team man, always putting the squad first. As a manager he is great to have around helping out when he can, pushing the other lads along and encouraging. The Waitohi man has had to play second fiddle to Liam Squire for a couple of seasons now but due to an injury to Squire on the weekend Vernon got his chance and made the most of it. It shows you that you have to be willing and ready to take your chance when it comes up, and that it’s crucial that if you aren’t get- SIDELINES Marty Vercoe ting game time that you keep working hard at training, not sulk and be ready when your name is called. It’s funny there are actually a few lads in the Makos set up that have starting their Makos careers as just squad members, but when they have been promoted to the starting 15 they have taken their chance by the scruff of the neck. Marty Banks is one such player who comes to mind. At the start of last season he wasn’t in the Makos squad but was signed on a development contract at Tasman Rugby. An injury to the incumbent first five at the time let Marty in for a start against Northland last year and the rest is history. I must also put a plug in for Ladies Day at the Makos verses Counties game on October 12. There is going to be an area designated at the ground for ladies, with a marquee and tables and chairs. Live music will be played prior to the game and beverages and refreshments are available. Tickets are $20 at Thomas’s. Top draw: Marty Banks is one of the Makos players who took his chance given a start and ran with it. He has quickly risen to become one of the top first five’s in the National Provincial Championship. Alyssums Gifts, Home & Kitchen CROSSWORD TOP 10 YOUR STARS THE TOP 10 1.
