Marlborough Mid-Week : November 19th 2014
NEWS MARLBOROUGH MIDWEEK, NOVEMBER 19, 2014 15 Ice provides hours of cheap entertainment As the Christmas season approaches, Blenheim Playcentre’s team leaders look at how play and toys can be made fun and affordable. This week Playcentre educator Nicola ‘‘Poz’’ Poswillo talks about playing with ice. You can smash it, hide things in it, throw it, float it, lick it and eat it. Ice has so many uses besides cooling your drinks or the chilly bin and as it is easy and free to create, it makes a perfect summer activity. Besides freezing water in a stan- dard ice block tray, you could also freeze an entire 2-litre ice-cream container, which takes a couple of days, but could keep the kids occupied for longer. You could freeze preserving pans or large teapots. Try freezing items into the ice such as shells, wood or toys, then ponder how to help them ‘‘escape’’. You could smash the ice by drop- ping it on the concrete or hit it with a hammer. As you smash, talk about the interesting patterns trapped inside the ice blocks. Ice blocks can also be placed in water, either in another container, paddling pool or even the bath. Do they float, sink or melt? Finally, add some colour to the ice in your ice block trays with food colouring. Not only do they look different, but you can use them to paint with once frozen.
