Marlborough Mid-Week : February 4th 2015
14 MARLBOROUGH MIDWEEK, FEBRUARY 4, 2015 NEWS Podiatrists put your feet first By SELINA POWELL One doesn’t always think about your feet, but keeping them in good health is as important as any other part of the body. It’s a message Marlborough people seem to heed with Blenheim Podiatry having to employ a new podiatrist to help cope with demand. Joel Bell started work at the podiatry practice at the corner of Seymour and Charles streets at the beginning of January. He finished a Bachelor of Health Science majoring in podiatry at Auckland University of Technology last year. He decided to go into the field after having firsthand experience of how beneficial podiatrists can be when he had surgery for an ingrown toe nail and treatment for shin splints. ‘‘I’d been to a podiatrist a couple of times and found it helpful. I wanted to do the same for other people,’’ he says Blenheim Podiatry, which is the only podiatrist in the Marlborough region, has four podiatrists, including Joel. They moved offices last year, and owner Kate Franken says she expected a slight lull in business after the move, but that didn’t happen. ‘‘We seem to be chugging along quite nicely,’’ she says. The region’s older population has contributed to the steady flow of patients, with about 20 per cent of the podiatry’s work coming through rest homes. As well as elderly people, many people in Marlborough are into outdoors activities like tramping, running and biking, which adds to the demand for their services, Kate says. ‘‘Because the climate’s so good you can go out and do stuff. We’ve got everything on our door step.’’ Industrial workers who spend long periods standing in work boots on concrete floors also sought treatment because work boots often offered little support, Kate says. Working as a podiatrist in Blenheim was rewarding because of the variety of work, she says. ‘‘You go right through from preschoolers, to kids that play touch rugby and soccer, right through to older people who can’t reach their toes and they’ve got corns and calluses.’’ ‘‘People walk out and they say, ‘I feel like I’m floating on air’. It is quite a feel good thing,’’ Kate says.
