Marlborough Mid-Week : February 11th 2015
RECREATION Popular4WDguided tour is taking off Off-road enthusiasts still have a chance to book their spot on a guided tour of the Marlborough back country which includes Mead Stream – one of the geological wonders of New Zealand. The event, being run for the third time since 2006, allows the public to bring their friends and their 4WD vehicles for a day-long guided tour of Bluff Station in the upper Clarence Valley, inland from Kekerengu. Three of New Zealand’s top geologists – Dr Chris Hollis, Russ Van Dissen and Dr James Crampton – will lead this year’s trip, being held on Sunday. Supporting the Kiwi trio will be charismatic American geologist Dr Jerry Dickens from Rice University in Texas, who has been studying the area with his New Zealand colleagues for the past 16 years. The $90 per person entry fee is being used to help raise funds for the Kekerengu Community Centre’s new tennis courts and leisure centre. Chris Hollis, of GNS Science, says the first trip was so popular the owners of the station decided to use the event as a community fundraiser. Landowner Sue Murray says the event focuses on the Mead Stream gorge, which is a 90-minute drive from the main road. ‘‘We find that people enjoy the spectacular back country drive as much as anything,’’ she says. After stopping for a BYO picnic lunch at Mead Stream, visitors will head off on foot for a threehour guided hike up the stream, stopping at several places to view points of interest before returning to the vehicles about 4pm. They then return to the Keke- rengu Community Hall for a barbecue dinner. There is about 80 million years of New Zealand history on display in the various rock exposures – possibly the only place in New Zealand where such a rich geological display can be seen in one afternoon, organisers say. Among the 10 or so points of interest on the tour is the Cretaceous- Big day: Participants stop to have a look at a geological formation during the last Bluff Station 4X4 trip in the upper Clarence River region. The trip is being held again this weekend. Tertiary boundary – a thin layer in the rocks that marks the extinction of the dinosaurs 66 million years ago. At the end of the hike, visitors come face-to-face with the Clarence fault – one of a cluster of active faults that branch off the Photo: SUPPLIED Alpine fault and trend northeast through Marlborough towards the North Island. ❚ To register for the event, contact Emma Bell 03 575 8767 or email KekerenguCommunity@gmail.com by the end of today.
