NEWS Makeover for tank A plain grey concrete water tank has been transformed into a work of art through the hard work of children at Waitaria Bay School. The two-year project has been such a success, the tank is now part of the school’s corporate image. Principal Brenda Sutton says the students were guided and encouraged by parent-helper, Agnes Takacs, a talented artist and photographer. They brainstormed, drafted, planned then set about creating an amazing colourful and fantastic mosaic on the water tank. ‘‘The brief was that the art needed to reflect the spectacular surroundings and wildlife of Waitaria Bay in the Kenepuru Sound,’’ explains Brenda. ‘‘All 12 students, ranging in age from five to 13, took part in the MARLBOROUGH MIDWEEK, FEBRUARY 25, 2015 15 The start: After the pattern has been drawn on the water tank, pupils begin to fill it in. work, putting in much love and effort week after week in all kinds of weather.’’ The project was supported and sponsored by companies, locals and the school fundraising group. A lot of tiles were donated by The Tile Shop in Palmerston North, one of many businesses that the school wrote to. Other materials included glass and shells.
