NEWS Tui Club enjoys great outdoors By MAIKE VAN DER HEIDE Finding insects and fishing for eels, building huts and swinging off trees – it’s all these joys of childhood that Blenheim Playcentre is actively fostering through their new outdoor-based education programme. The Tui Club, based at the Taylor Dam reserve in Blenheim, is held every Tuesday afternoon for active 3 and 4-year-olds and their families. Team leader Karina Love says besides supervised free play in the fresh air, organised activities include a visit from animal control about dogs and dog safety, finding and identifying insects, spotting and learning about eels and more. She believes the Tui Club is the only entirely out- door based early childhood education in Marlborough. So far, nine children attend and Karina hopes more will follow. ❚ To join Tui Club, held Tuesdays from 12.15pm to 2.45pm, contact Karina, Mel, Sacha or Poz at Blenheim Playcentre on 03 577 5216 on weekdays from 9.30am to noon, or email firstname.lastname@example.org. Children need to attend one session per week at any of Marlborough’s six Playcentres to join Tui Club.
