Marlborough Mid-Week : May 20th 2015
NEWS MARLBOROUGH MIDWEEK, MAY 20, 2015 19 Dolphins divided by Kaikoura split By HELEN HILL New research into Hector’s dolphins along the Kaikoura coast has shown that there are two distinct populations – one north of the peninsula and one south. The results of the research done by Kaikoura Ocean Research Institute (KORI) were presented by research director Jody Weir at a talk on Saturday. The most commonly seen dolphins along the coast are Hector’s and dusky. Hector’s have a small range of about 50 kilometres between the Kaikoura peninsula and Hamuri bluff, while duskies have been tracked from here up to Admiralty Bay in the Marlborough Sounds. Weir said the research was aimed at finding out which Hector’s dolphins were local to Kaikoura and where they lived. During the calendar year of 2013 48 surveys were done, and between December last year and March this year another 17. In 2013 164 groups of dolphins were sighted and latterly, 61, from the Hapuku river mouth to Hamuri. They were most populous at the two extremes of the range, although why hasn’t yet been worked out, and there were more between Kaikoura and Hapuku than south of Kaikoura. This year researchers same time 71. All came from between Gore Bay and Ward Beach. Weir said this revealed that north and south of Kaikoura the Hector’s populations were quite different and they were not mating with each other. Those in Cloudy Bay were also genetically different. ‘‘This shows that the can- A Kaikoura Hector’s dolphin and her calf, photographed during this year’s research by KORI. found that those photographed both north and south of the peninsula were only ever seen in the same place. This suggested that there were two distinct populations. Funding was received from the Department of Conservation to do genetic research on the dolphins, in conjunction with the Universities of Auckland and Oregon. For two weeks during April and May last year, 88 samples were collected and this year at the yon is acting as a barrier to genetic connectivity,’’ she said. Most Hector’s were found in shallow, murky water up to 10 metres deep with fewer in water deepening to 50 metres. The average group size was six, and the largest was 18. More were seen in summer and autumn than during winter and spring. During the latest research, information was also collected about calves born between November and February. Weir said their average weight was nine kilograms and their average life expectancy 20 years. ‘‘This year was very good for Hector’s calves,’’ said Weir, noting that they could often be seen in shallow surf close to shore. Hector’s dolphins may prefer to be in shallow water to avoid set nets, which are banned less than four nautical miles from shore, although around the Kaikoura Canyon commercial fishers may set them up to one nautical mile from shore. Weir said the ban was protect- ing the Hector’s habitat. One interesting side-effect of the latest research was the large number of elephant seals sighted along the coast last summer. She said this may indicate that they are setting up a new colony.
